JELOVAC LEADS UTICA IN COMEBACK WIN
UTICA, N.Y. – Utica City FC Captain Bo Jelovac returned to the lineup and scored two goals to help City rally to beat the Mississauga MetroStars 6-5 Saturday night at the Adirondack Bank Center.
Mauricio Salles added a pair of strikes to aid the home side to maintain their push for the Eastern Division title.
Joey Tavernese scored the opening goal of the game when his shot caromed off a MetroStars defender past goaltender Adrian Becic. Less than two minutes later, Jelovac's powerful free-kick flew past Becic gave the home side an early 2-0 lead.
Mississauga responded with three unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, Salles' left foot evened the score at three, but the MetroStars responded a minute later with a goal to restore their lead.
Freddy Moojen's wonderful solo effort danced through the heart of the Mississauga defense and evened the score at four apiece before Darren Chambers' second goal of the night gave the MetroStars their advantage at 5-4
City entered the final quarter down a goal, but tallies from Jelovac and Salles propelled Utica to victory on their home turf. Jelovac's goal was a heavily deflected effort that found its way into the back of the net. Salles' strike did not need any assistance. A rocket on the power play for Salles' second of the game to give City a lead they would not give up.
Utica City returns to the turf at the Adirondack Bank Center tomorrow to take on the Baltimore Blast. Kick-off against Baltimore is at 2 p.m. Tickets are still available at www.empirestatetix.com.
